White is a neutral bright backdrop. Off-white is a very slightly softened white, not a visibly colored wall. The US Department of State allows plain white or off-white backgrounds. It does not give a required hex code.
Both options are in the picker. A screen preview cannot prove how a printed photo will look or whether the issuing authority will accept it.
US passport background rules
| Requirement | What to do |
|---|---|
| Background | Plain white or off-white, without shadows, textures, or objects. |
| Printed dimensions | 2x2 inches. Check head size and position too. |
| Editing | Submit an original photo. Do not use software or AI to change it. |
| Lighting | Use even light so your face and backdrop remain clear. |

Avoid a gray backdrop and shadow look
- Use a real white or off-white wall and face a bright window without direct sun.
- Leave space between your head and the wall to reduce the shadow behind you.
- Ask someone to hold the camera at eye level. Check the original photo for even lighting before cropping.
Common problems to check
| Problem | Better approach |
|---|---|
| Wall looks dark gray | Retake with more even light on the wall. |
| Shadow behind the head | Move away from the wall and adjust the lighting. |
| Hair has a bright halo after editing | Inspect edges; retake on the required background for a US passport. |
| Face changed by a filter or AI | Use the original, unedited photo. |
| Wrong crop or dimensions | Check the document specification, not just background color. |
