UK passport photo rules at a glance
- Printed size: 35 x 45 mm.
- Head height: 29–34 mm from chin to crown.
- Digital size: at least 600 x 750 pixels, 50 KB to 10 MB.
- Background: plain light grey or cream, no patterns or objects.
- Expression: facing forward, neutral, mouth closed, eyes open.
- Recency: taken within the last month for a digital application.
Digital applications: what actually gets checked
When you apply online, the photo is run through an automated checker before a human sees it. It measures the face position, the contrast between you and the background, the sharpness of the image and the pixel dimensions. Blurry photos, dark backgrounds and crops that place the head too low are the usual automated failures.
Taking the photo at home
- Stand about half a metre from a plain light wall, facing a window.
- Have someone stand a metre away and hold the phone at your eye level.
- Do not use a selfie arm's-length shot — it distorts the face and is not accepted.
- Neutral expression, no hat, hair away from the eyes, no flash.
- Upload it here and download the correctly sized file.
UK visa and settlement photos
UK visa, BRP and settlement applications use the same 35 x 45 mm format, so the UK preset works for those too. For other countries, use the AI visa photo maker.

UK passport photo FAQ
- What size is a UK passport photo?
- 35 x 45 mm for a printed photo, with the head measuring 29–34 mm from chin to crown. Digital photos submitted online must be at least 600 x 750 pixels and between 50 KB and 10 MB.
- Can I take a UK passport photo at home?
- Yes. HM Passport Office accepts a digital photo taken at home as long as it is clear, in focus, in colour, taken against a plain light-coloured background with even lighting, and is not a selfie taken at arm's length. Ask someone else to take it, or use a tripod or timer.
- Can I wear glasses in a UK passport photo?
- You should not wear glasses unless you have to, and if you do the eyes must be clearly visible with no glare, tint or frames obscuring them. Taking them off is the safest option.
- What background do I need for a UK passport photo?
- A plain light-coloured background — light grey or cream is the guidance — with no pattern, no objects and no shadow behind your head.
