What consulates check
- Exact print dimensions and head height within the frame.
- A plain, evenly lit background with no shadow behind the head.
- Full face visible from hairline to chin, ears often required to be visible.
- Neutral expression, eyes open, no glasses glare, no head covering.
- A recent photo — usually within the last six months.
Chinese visa photos
China is the strictest of the common destinations: 33 x 48 mm, head 28–33 mm, pure white background, ears and eyebrows visible, and no glasses at all. The online CVASF form also enforces a pixel range and a maximum file size, so export as JPG.
Schengen visa photos
All 29 Schengen states accept the same ICAO format: 35 x 45 mm with the head filling about 70–80% of the frame, on a plain light background. One correctly made photo works for any of them.

Visa photo FAQ
- Is a visa photo the same as a passport photo?
- Often, but not always. Many countries use the same size for both — the UK and Schengen states use 35 x 45 mm for each. A Chinese visa photo is 33 x 48 mm, and a US visa photo is 2 x 2 inches like the passport. Always pick the preset that matches the document you are applying for.
- What background does a visa photo need?
- Almost always a plain white or very light background with no shadows. A handful of consulates specify light blue or off-white, which is why this tool offers both.
- Can I use an AI visa photo maker for an embassy application?
- Yes. Embassies check the finished photo against a specification. Automatic cropping, resizing and plain background replacement are all acceptable; retouching your face is not.
- What file format do consulates accept?
- JPEG is the safest choice for online forms and is usually capped at a few hundred kilobytes to a few megabytes. Download as JPG here and check the size limit on the application page.
