Passport Photo Rejected? Here's Why (and How to Fix It)

Rejections are usually one of six things

Passport offices publish their rejection statistics, and the pattern is remarkably consistent across countries. If your photo came back, it is very likely one of the issues below.

• Shadows — on the face, or cast onto the background behind the head.
• Wrong dimensions or head height — the single most common digital rejection.
• Glare, tinted lenses or heavy frames obscuring the eyes.
• A non-neutral expression: smiling, raised eyebrows, mouth open.
• A patterned, coloured or textured background instead of a plain one.
• Low resolution, heavy compression, or an obviously filtered image.

Fixing shadows

Shadows come from a single strong light source. Stand facing a large window during the day, with no lamp behind you, and move about half a metre away from the wall so your body does not cast a shadow onto it. Do not use your phone's flash.

Fixing size and head height

This is the one you should never do by hand. Head height is measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head including hair, and it has to fall inside a narrow band — 25 to 35 mm for the US, 29 to 34 mm for the UK. Use a preset that applies the correct crop for your country and export at 300 DPI so the print is sharp.

Fixing glasses and expression

Simplest fix: take the glasses off. The UK, Australia and several EU states now prefer or require photos without glasses, and no glasses means no glare and no frames crossing the eyes.

For expression, look straight at the lens with your mouth closed and your eyes open — relaxed, not stiff. Take five or six frames and pick the most neutral one.
