Change background of passport photo to red
Choose Red to replace a photo backdrop and download JPG and PNG for an ID or badge that permits it. US passport photos need an original, unedited white or off-white backdrop, not red.

Some school or work badge systems and ID processes may request a red backdrop. Use red only when the exact issuing authority requires or permits it. Do not assume every document in a country uses the same color.
We do not list countries as accepting red without a verified rule for the specific document. Check the official rules for your country and application before editing.
Change the backdrop to red
- Upload a sharp, evenly lit photo for a use that allows editing.
- Choose Red or enter the issuer’s exact six-digit hex shade. Select the required document size.
- Check hair edges, face detail, and clothing contrast. Download and extract the ZIP to find the red PNG and JPG.
Choose the required shade
| Option | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Red | Only where the issuer permits a red backdrop. |
| Custom red | Match a written hex specification if one is provided. |
| White or off-white | Required physical backdrop colors for an original US passport photo. |
| Blue | A separate option, not interchangeable with red. |

Watch edges and contrast
Red clothing can blend into the background. Review the outline at full size for halos or missing hair. Changing the backdrop does not restore a blurred face or prove that the photo is acceptable.
Check your document requirements
Check the official rules for your country before submission. Read our US passport photo requirements, UK passport photo guide, and visa photo guidance for related sizes and background information.
Red background FAQ
- Can a US passport photo have a red background?
- No. Use a plain white or off-white physical backdrop in an original, unedited photo.
- Is changing the background to red free?
- Basic editing and PNG/JPG downloads are free. Paid printable sheets and other premium exports remain separate.
- Can I use an exact red shade?
- Yes. Enter a valid six-digit hex code if your issuing authority supplies one. A generic red preset is not a universal document standard.
- Does the ZIP include the red version?
- Yes. Selecting Red adds red PNG and JPG images alongside white and light-blue versions.
- Will an edited background be accepted?
- Acceptance is not guaranteed. The US Department of State asks for an original, unedited photo and says not to change it with software, filters, or AI. Take a new photo against a real white or off-white background for a US passport. Other documents have their own rules.
