| Shade | What to check |
|---|---|
| Light blue | A pale backdrop. Use it only if the written document rules allow this shade. |
| Blue | A stronger color. Do not assume it can replace light blue in a specification. |
| Custom blue | Enter the exact hex only when your issuer provides one. |
| White or off-white | Use a real backdrop in an original photo for a US passport. |
Where a blue background may be requested
A company badge, local ID, or particular visa process may specify a blue backdrop. Requirements vary by issuer, so this page does not assign blue to a whole country or every document.
Check the official rules for your country and the exact application. If the instructions say white, do not submit light blue. For US passports, follow the Department of State’s original-photo and white or off-white background rules.

How to change a photo background to blue
- Upload a clear photo for a document that permits background editing.
- Choose Light blue, Blue, or the exact custom shade requested by your issuer.
- Select the required size and inspect edges, lighting, and contrast before downloading.
Keep the photo easy to read
Dark clothing can blend into a strong blue backdrop, while missing hair edges can appear as a halo. Check the full preview. A new backdrop cannot correct blurred facial details or poor lighting.
Choose the required document size, such as 35x45 mm or 2x2 inches, separately from the backdrop. These dimensions do not mean blue is allowed.
Check your document requirements
Check the official rules for your country before submission. Read our US passport photo requirements, UK passport photo guide, and visa photo guidance for related sizes and background information.
