Phone browser versus downloading an app
| Choice | Useful difference |
|---|---|
| SnapPass AI browser | No installation; requires an internet connection for AI processing. |
| Downloaded app | Requires installation. Features, offline access, privacy, and charges vary by app. |
| Background colors | This browser tool has named shades and custom hex; check any app’s actual options. |
| Exports | Basic PNG/JPG ZIP is free here. Other apps may have different formats and fees. |
Take a better phone photo
Have someone else hold the phone at eye level, or use a timer. Use even lighting, a clean lens, and the original camera image. Avoid portrait-mode blur, beauty filters, and screenshots.
Leave space around the head and shoulders. For a US passport, start with a real white or off-white background and do not digitally edit the result. Check the official rules for your country for other documents.

Choose a size and save the files
The size menu includes 2x2 inch and 35x45 mm presets. Check the required size and the digital photo upload limits on your application, because a print-size preset alone is not enough.
Keep the original photo and extracted files in your phone’s storage. If you need a printable 4x6 sheet, that is a paid export option rather than part of the free download.
Check your document requirements
Check the official rules for your country before submission. Read our US passport photo requirements, UK passport photo guide, and visa photo guidance for related sizes and background information.
Phone browser FAQ
- Is there an app to change passport photo background without a download?
- SnapPass AI is a browser-based tool. Open it on your phone without installing a native app.
- Does it work on iPhone and Android?
- Use Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android. Photo selection and download locations can vary with your phone and browser.
- Can I change the background color on my phone?
- Yes. Choose a named shade or a custom hex color in the picker, then review the preview.
- Why did my phone download a ZIP?
- The ZIP keeps white and light-blue versions together, plus your selected extra shade. Extract it to access individual PNG and JPG images.
- Does it work offline?
- No. Real photo AI processing requires an internet connection. The demo is preprocessed.
- Will an edited background be accepted?
- Acceptance is not guaranteed. The US Department of State asks for an original, unedited photo and says not to change it with software, filters, or AI. Take a new photo against a real white or off-white background for a US passport. Other documents have their own rules.
